A Review of the News for the Past Year

Dr Keck Celebrates 100th Birthday

Pastor Emeritus Albert Keck,

beloved Pastor of St Andrew's and Church Leader was honored Sunday March 21st with a reception at the Lutheran Home given to all his friends and admirers by his family.  Bishop Bolick, area pastors, other residents and a crowd of friends and well-wishers filled the spacious Chapel gathering area at the Home as Dr Keck cheerfully greeted every single one.  His actual birthday is March 23.

STIVERS HONORED

Pastor Stanley Stiver and Jane were honored with a reception, gifts and the dedication of a tree planted in their honor on the front lawn.

SNOW! SNOW!  SNOW!
Snow clobbered plans for Sunday Jan 31st.   Good memories will recall that it was the anniversary of the day the American Boy Choir visited to perform the Mozart Missa Brevis.  Not to be undone, we scheduled it for later in the day.  This time we lost the second performance of 'Amahl', and SCS classes.  A hearty bunch attended the Service, with a big help from Susan Rendelman.

Lenoir-Rhyne Presents "Amahl" at St Andrew's

Starring our own Chelsie Propst in the main role, that of the Mother, and using a cast of the University's music students under Vocal Arts Professor Judith Burbank, who directed the operetta, "Amahl and the Night Visitors' came to St Andrew's for many nights of rehearsal and a triumphant first performance on January 23rd.  What a treat!!  Epiphany never had a better affirmation!

2009 CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS DELIGHT US

New Pouring Lip Chalice  Dedicated December 6th

The sisters and children of Darrell Yount have contributed funds to enable us to acquire a new ‘pouring’ chalice for our communion services.  The pouring chalice permits us to exhibit the cup of unity called for by the deep significance of the sacrament of the altar, but lets the celebrant then distribute the element of wine to other vessels for sharing with the communicants.  In our case, the chalice will permit us to use the single cup in our eucharistic consecration, and from it fill the cups into which we dip our wafers.
Such a communion Cup can also be used to fill the individual glasses sometimes used for distributing the wine at the altar.  This cup is a beautiful brushed silver, nicely matching both our pewter vessels and our silver presentation vessels, with its own paten/cover.   It is inscribed on its base with the words “In loving memory of Darrell R. Yount”.    It will certainly remind us of the everlasting communion into which Christ has brought us by the sharing of the sacramental gift of His life.  The Chalice was dedicated in church on Sunday, December 6th.

NEW AMPLIFIER INSTALLED at ST ANDREW's

A new amplifier was installed for the church's sound system on December 1st.  It is hoped that the new unit will enable a return to the superb sound quality the system was designed to supply.

Thomas W. Reese dies Thursday November 26th

Funeral at St Andrew's Tuesday, December 1st 3pm

Tom Reese succumbed to weakening after an infection interrupted his recovery from major surgery last summer.   His funeral was held at St Andrew's on Tuesday, December 1st at 3:00pm.  Guest speakers were George Glisan, President--CEO of the Hickory Printing Group, the company founded by Tom Reese, and Jim Loscheider, Vice-President of Samaritan's Purse in Boone, NC.  Hundreds of mourners attended the service.

Women's Sunday Featured Special Guest

The preacher for the occasion was Mary Louise Sitton, a pastor of the NC Synod presently serving St Luke's in Mt Ulla. She's a special guest for us because we were privileged to host her ordination to the ministry.

In Remembrance: Darrell Yount

Members of the family of Darrell Yount, who died this past March 16th, have made a unique gift to St Andrew’s in Memorial Tribute to Darrell.   Darrell Yount was a paragon of faithfulness attending church, almost always either on the usher list for the day or willing to serve at a moment’s notice.  A person who took tremendous personal interest in the welcoming of all other members, his presence in our midst was a big part of what made a generation of worshipers feel at home at St Andrew’s.

The ushers use an important table area for storing their hand-outs and bulletins.  It serves as a silent communication center for the weekday office staff.  It is a symbol of the ministry of welcome and service to those who worship here.  The beautiful new, perfectly suited table given to the church bears a humble plaque of recognition for Darrell Yount, but if we think of him as we pass by it on our way into church, it will remind us of the spirit of affectionate welcome we have come to know from him, and his work will continue

LENOIR-RHYNE SACRED MUSIC PROGRAM TO PRESENT EVENING PRAYER SERIES

The Sacred Music Program of Lenoir-Rhyne University will sponsor two choral evening prayer services this fall and two more in the spring semester.

The third service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. at St. Andrew’s. The Sacred Music Program will sponsor Vespers in the Eastern Orthodox tradition featuring the Carolina Deanery Choir of the Orthodox Church in America and the Chapel Choir of Lenoir-Rhyne University.  An explanation of the liturgy will precede the service.

The final service in this year’s series will be performed on Saturday, March 6, at 4 p.m. at First Methodist.  The Sacred Music Program and Northminster Presbyterian Church, Hickory, will sponsor Evening Prayer with John Bell and the A Cappella Choir of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Paul D. Weber, director.

The CHOIR Came and Conquered

The Western Carolina University Concert Choir presented an hour and a half of sacred and secular music at St Andrew's on October 25th.  Fully forty singers exhibited their skills in a rousing concert attended by about 130 people.

St Andrew's families hosted most of the singers, providing overnight room and breakfast board.  Eric and Barbie Setzer and friends fed the group supper, College Ministries committee members helped all over especially with decorations, and Ada Smith just about personally managed the housing program.

Aquinas/Luther Conference involved Pastor Fritz and Cecilia in a couple of events as friends of the guest speaker Eric Gritsch.  The main event was Friday, October 23rd.

RACE for the CURE a SUCCESS

Our team in the Susan G Komen RACE for the CURE had a great time on a lovely day October 17th, combining with hundreds and hundreds of other committed caring people for a fabulous turnout.  Thanks to Charlie Wiedey for organizing our group and helping to lead the whole project.

Men's Father/Daughter/Son/Guest Banquet
October 18th

featured an entertaining and charming presenter who brought his eleven-year-old son to help illustrate his message: you need to live out of a vision, not circumstances; and you need to remember who you are.  Great food made for great fellowship.  Thanks, men!!

Homecoming Was GREAT This Year

A great turnout, plenty of snacks and a powerful sermon from our guest speaker Peter Setzer filled the day with high energy.  Worship was rich with special music, and our good crowd included lots of visitors returning for the occasion, including several from out of town.  THANKS to all--those who made such great preparations and especially to all those who came 'home' to make our day so wonderful.

Guests included daughter Alyssa, son Eric and all the grandchildren of Barbara Keck Pitts;  Jeff and Joy and Dale and Brenda Cline, Marvin Pope, Albert Kaiser, Carol Hoke Harkrader and her husband and son, Sue Setzer and her mom Evelyn Mullen, George and Mark Byers and families--among many many others to be posted soon!!

Harold Haas led a review of the two versions of the Lord's Prayer presented in our worship hymnals.  One uses the word "sins" instead of ''trespasses",  as the prayer is often translated in Luke.  The presentation was well attended and very well received.

Members of the family of the late Frank Byers were in church on Sunday, September 6th,  to mark together the fifth anniversary of his death.

Nearly 30 new L-R students attended worship on Sunday, August 23rd.  Pastor Andrew Weisner, College Pastor, preached

L-R Servant Project Was a Huge Success

Costa Rica

The visit Sunday from our friends at Holy Trinity was a huge success, well attended and wonderfully presented by Pastor Brian Ballard and several supporting friends who went with him on the last trip to Costa Rica.

Freedom Sunday

What a wonderful July 4th we celebrated this year!  Our worship including the moving tribute that's become our tradition, as we honor the service of our veterans and all who have given their lives in the defense of our country.

Men's Sunday in June

Last month's Men's Sunday was a moving and memorable day as our former 'son of the congregation' Mr. Jeff Norris, Jr. returned to deliver a meditation on the meaning of the church in his journey of faith.  A very active leader at St Stephens' Lutheran Church in Lenoir, NC,  Jeff is also a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne and the father of an incoming first-year student.   Special thanks as well to Eric Setzer for ably leading the liturgy on this very complete Men's Sunday.

LUTHEROCK CAMPFIRMATION

participants Caroline Sigmon and Carolina Mauser also made us proud as they stood out among the 25 youth attending the Cluster 8 annual event.  Pastor Fritz was there to teach and climb to supper with them every day..

NEW Members received in June:

Freddie and Mary Joan Robinson with her children Sarah and Joseph joined our church after almost a year of participating in our worship, education and music ministries.   Both are natives of Hickory.  They were married at St Andrew's in November of last year.  Mary Joan works for her family's business.  Freddie is a screenwriter who works also in the restaurant industry.  Sarah and Joseph are stars in our Children's Choir.

Mary Sue Isenhour has worshiped among us for many months.  She's a resident of Lutherhaus.  She was a charter member of one of our sister Lutheran churches. She comes to us from Sandy Springs Baptist Church

Monty and Suzie Matthews, newly resident in the college neighborhood, joined our church about the same time they put their gorgeous, revitalized home on the Garden Tour!  Suzie returns to the L-R neighborhood; she's an alumna.

News of our Members

Sympathy for Edrys Ashman
The L-R community was rocked by the sudden death of the popular and respect 35-year faculty member Lowell Ashman, whose wife is a member of St Andrew's.  A memorial service led by College Pastor Andrew Weisner, featuring a eulogy by Rufus Moretz, gathered a congregation which filled St Andrew's to overflowing on Monday, October 12th.  Our prayers are with Edie, daughter (and son-in-law) Lisa and Rick Huffman and their girls Hannah Grace and Chloe.
